In the dining room, the large Dutch table is lit by an 18th century chandelier. A collection of antique mercury glass candlesticks add sparkle to late night suppers. A mirror and framed artwork are ranged along a white-lacquered wood shelf running the length of the back wall, providing a simple and easily-changed display area. On the right, two Fortuny lamps add a decorative touch. A view through the music room to the living area. In the foreground, a Nagato tabouret by Christian Liaigre is
Vermont, Vermont
Ohhhh, we’re all slowly coming back today, right? I had 5 sweet days of vacation in a tiny, wonderfully comfortable farmhouse in the woods of Vermont (there was even a very fierce sheep to keep us company!). My favorite feature of the house was the huge limestone sink with the mercury glass bulb pendants above. The nights were cool, the days sunny, breezy and everything was green. On the 4th we went to the Saxtons River annual celebration which included pie, hula hoop contents, lots of firem
what you see
When you examine the mirrored lines and silvered curves, consider the speculative shapings in the depths of the mercury glass, what emerges most clearly is something that isn't there. The slivers of vision collide, cascade, nest like matryoshka dolls. But there's no answering glance, no eyes raised to meet your own. What's missing is your own reflection. "Naive" isn't one of the adjectives that I'd generally use to describe myself, but I've been, well, a little taken aback by the general hosti
Dressing For The 4th
If I were hosting a fabulous 4th, I'd take a seaside theme and run with it! Mercury glass votives and red and white coral from Z Gallerie, blue coral via Beach Dwelling, linen coral napkin and silver rope pitcher from Vivre, and red glasses from Horchow. I would cluster red white and blue coral for the centerpieces, and accent them with seashells and mercury glass votives placed throughout the table. The gorgeous silver and rope collection of serving pieces at Vivre would add a special touch,
Staying In After a Fun Saturday
I'm staying in and enjoying a lazy Sunday at home today after a very fun and eventful Saturday. After having lunch with Kylie yesterday, I drove back out to suburbia. After a while, Fabian and I headed back into town to run a few errands. He mentioned that he wanted to go back to Kuhl-Linscomb. By then, it was almost 5:30, so we didn't have much time to look around as they close at 6:00. Kuhl-Linscomb is one of my favorite stores. It is comprised of five buildings and carries home furnishings a

In Celebration of Summer Solstice...
I decided a field trip to LaMaison Rustique was in order.  I actually made the trek solo, as nobody could "come out to play" this morning.  Since our crazy June weather was expected to be in the triple digits (yes, that's at least 100 degrees!) today, I decided to head out early this morning to beat the heat.  (Whatever happened to our June gloom??)  I arrived at The Barn Sale right at opening and realized that 9:30 AM Friday morning is the BEST time to go, since you have first choice at ALL th
Shop Keeping
Still working away at updating the website. There is still much more to come. I've added lots of gorgeous mercury glass for those of us who like a little glamour. And these are my favorites! This set of Mercury Glass Hurricanes are so classic with their cylinder shape and timeless white floral detail. Together they make a substantial center piece for an outdoor table or coffee table. You can see all the recently added items by clicking here and I'll be sure to let you know as I get more st
Bountiful treasures at Saint-Sulpice
A 19th-century stone angel between a wing and a prayer at Sophie Pretelat's Anges et Demons at the brocante at Place Saint-Sulpice, Paris. Monday's the last day of the 31st Foire aux Antiquaires, so best get your skates on! Last chance until 2009! Take the Metro Line 10 to Mabillion, then walk two blocks to the brocante opposite the Church of Saint-Sulpice. You can't miss it, thanks to the cranes and scaffolding still present amidst the church's long-term renovation effort. A marble child'
Palette & Paints: Minimalist Metallics
From Julie: We’ve covered silver before (see Palette & Paints: Silver). These photos inspired us to think about more minimalist metallics. Below: New York architect David Hotson adds a dash of glamour to a NYC kitchen, improbably mixing a silver Bisazza backdrop with Donald Judd-like seating. Below: We have extolled the virtues of Michael Anastassiades in the past (our design heroine, Ilse Crawford, used his lights in her brilliant design for the Hotel Stockholm). We recommend his Dou
Stacie’s Design Dilemma
There’s nothing quite like a light and serene spot to rest your pretty little head. And that’s exactly what Stacie had in mind when she wrote to us. Here’s her letter: What a fun site you have!!! I spent quite a bit of time on it last night and it occurred to me you might be able to help me out. I’m just about to overhaul my bedroom. Its very big and very dark and I want it LIGHT LIGHT LIGHT and airy. I’m into modern styles with a touch of hollywood regency in there somewhere (and I LOVE Barba
I blame the jet lag
Never mind that I am an experienced traveler and know the tricks to avoid jet lag. Exhaustion after three weeks of non-stop travel must be the reason that today I couldn't resist this 1920s Guignol puppet theatre - which folds up like a suitcase! How convenient is that??!! Hello Ulla, Vanessa? I know you adore puppet theatres too. Wouldn't you have indulged a whim and taken this theatre home? I found a few other little things such as rose-coloured 18th-century books, mercury-glass gazing bal

A Stainless Steel Toilet.
You know you’re out of your normal realm when you find this…and since you blog…you HAVE TO take a picture… Yep, that’s a stainless steel toilet. It was a public restroom. Well, I had to go! Moving on… We’re in LA. The housesitter/petsitter dude is taking care of Tal and the fort. Speaking of the fort…the gazebo started to blow away and was smacking up against the house and attacking my garden…so I took the scissors to it and killed it. The Fiance was heartbroken. What can I say? I valu
Decor - How to Transform Your Home into an Oasis
I find most interior design showrooms are drier than the desert when it comes to locating cool Moroccan accessories. I'm always on the hunt for those quirky and exotic iron trimmed mercury glass lanterns, carved mirrors and headboards with rounded Gothic edges and peaks, and embroidered poufs...
